The AAI is an amateur astronomy organization in central New Jersey. It was founded in 1949, with currently over 400 members making it one of the largest astronomy clubs to date. The image above is our observatory named after William M. Sperry , which houses two of the largest telescopes on the east coast for amateur use. The east dome hold a 10" f/15 refractor built by AAI members, the west Dome has a 24" f/11 Cassegrain reflecting telescope purchased by AAI.

AAI also is a very active organization. We have eclipse trips, various classes, a computer dept. & BBS, a large library, a machine and optical shop, along with a research and education group to name just a few.

Meeting Information

AAI is open to the public on most Friday nites between 7:30 and 10:30pm at the Sperry Observatory located on the Union County College Cranford campus, located at 1033 Springfield Ave., Cranford, NJ .

From September till April we have a speaker talk about an astronomical or space-related topic on the THIRD Friday of the month [ see below ]. Starting usually around 8:30pm. Our business meeting starts at 8pm sharp.

Directions to Sperry & UCC

Take the Garden State Parkway (GSP), turn off at exit 137 (Rt. 28), take 28 WEST and follow the signs to Union County College (UCC). Bear to your RIGHT passing Centennial Ave, and right before the Amoco gas station turn RIGHT onto Springfield Ave (Rt 615). Then at an intersection (with a traffic light) you will see the College on your LEFT at the THIRD traffic light ABOUT 1 mile DOWN.

Enter the colleges parking lot to where it ends, and proceed to park. If there is a lecture scheduled it will be either in the auditorium or the North Lecture Hall [see below]. Otherwise make a left through the parking lot and you should see the Observatory off a side road.

Unless listed otherwise all speakers will do their presentation in the Auditorium.

NOTE: At the Jenny Jump Observatory , lectures are occuring during the summer while AAI is in recess.

Meet the speaker before the talk

Does the speaker or the topic whet your appetite ? If so there is a dinner with the speaker and several members of AAI at the Jolly Trolly, 411 North Ave., Westfield (phone: 908 232 1207) (about 15 minutes from Sperry) starting around 6pm. If your interested in going contact Karl Hricko by email so he knows how many people are coming.

UACNJ Affiliation

AAI also is a member of UACNJ (United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey, Inc.,) which maintains a fantastic (and DARK!) observatory for amateurs at Jenny Jump State Park in Hope, NJ (open to the public in Mid-April (weather permitting)
